Festivals & traditions

🪔
October · Major festival
Diwali — Festival of Lights
The biggest celebration of the year for the family — the Hindu festival of lights marking the triumph of light over darkness. Diyas, fireworks, sweets, and gatherings with family and friends. Celebrated with the full energy and joy it deserves every October.
🌸
September · Telangana tradition
Bathukamma — Floral Festival of Telangana
A uniquely Telangana festival where flowers are stacked into colorful cone-shaped arrangements and women sing and dance around them before immersing them in water. A celebration of nature, womanhood, and Telugu cultural identity — one of the most visually beautiful traditions in South India.
🔥
January · Sankranti season
Bhogi — First Day of Sankranti
The bonfire festival that opens the Makar Sankranti harvest celebration — old and unused items are burned in a bonfire at dawn, symbolizing letting go of the past and welcoming new beginnings. A deeply rooted Andhra and Telangana tradition celebrated with family.
🐘
August · 10-day celebration
Ganesh Chaturthi
The ten-day celebration welcoming Lord Ganesha — the remover of obstacles and patron of new beginnings. Prayers, modaks, and community gatherings mark the festival, which culminates in the immersion of Ganesha idols. A festival Krthin has grown up celebrating every year.
🪇
October · Navratri
Dandiya — Navratri Dance
The energetic stick dance of Navratri — colorful costumes, rhythmic music, and the fast-paced crossing of dandiya sticks in pairs and circles. Nine nights of dance and devotion honoring the goddess Durga. Krthin joins family and friends in the festivities every year.
🧵
August · Siblings tradition
Rakhi — Raksha Bandhan
The festival of the bond between siblings — sisters tie a protective thread (rakhi) on their brother's wrist, and brothers promise to protect and care for their sisters. A meaningful annual ritual between Krthin and his sister Ila that celebrates their bond.
Identity

Two worlds, one identity

🗣️
Language
Telugu heritage
The family's roots are in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh — the heartland of Telugu culture, one of India's classical languages with a rich literary and artistic tradition. The festivals Krthin celebrates are distinctly Telugu in character: Bathukamma, Bhogi, and Ugadi are not pan-Indian — they are Telugu.
🇮🇳
Connection
Three visits to India by age 10
Krthin has visited India three times — December 2023, March 2025, and August 2025 — spending extended time with family in Hyderabad and Bengaluru. The festivals he celebrates at home in Redmond are the same ones he experiences in their full form during these visits.
🌏
Balance
Pacific Northwest & South India
Krthin moves naturally between two cultural worlds — competing in national math tournaments and swimming at AG1 level in Washington, while lighting diyas at Diwali and dancing Dandiya with family each Navratri. Neither world is a performance; both are simply home.
